Surviving a 10-Hour International Flight.
Hello! I wanted to share about our favorite travel essentials when traveling with a toddler. It can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if it's your child's first time on a long flight in another country. I'll share some tips and items we found helpful. Just remember that what worked for us may not work for everyone. While I did a lot of reading and research, I also trusted my instincts and packed things I knew would be useful during our trip. I was worried because her dad wasn't able to join us.
1. Snacks and drinks: I gave her favorite snacks before waiting for our flight and during takeoff. She did great - no crying at all. I also brought her a water bottle; you can’t bring water through TSA, but I refilled it inside.
2. iPad & Headphone: These were quite helpful throughout our entire trip, even though she also enjoyed using the airplane's TV and headphones.
3. Toys: These were the toys that she liked. She played with them not only on the plane but also throughout the entire trip. They kept her occupied while we stayed at the hotel and more.
3. Comfort Items: I made sure to bring her favorite blanket and doll. Sadly, I couldn't find a link for her Cabbage Patch doll. This was extremely useful! She slept continuously for 3 hours once we were on the plane, which was a great relief. On the way back, she slept almost the whole flight after having dinner, as she was completely exhausted. I didn't purchase an inflatable mattress or anything like that, but we had pillows. She ended up taking up two seats next to the window.
4. Extra Clothes: Pack an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag. Accidents happen, and having spare clothes will help keep your child comfortable during the trip. For example, when we were having our in-flight meal, she spilled her apple juice, haha! Also, remember to bring a jacket or something warm because planes can be chilly. On the return flight, I changed her into pajamas since it was a night flight.
5. Diapers & Wipes: When it comes to diapers and wipes, it's best to be well-prepared so you don't have to stress about running out. During our 10-hour flight, I had to change my child's diaper 3 to 5 times, including while waiting at the airport lounge.
6. First Aid Kit: Don't forget to pack pain relievers, adhesive bandages, or any items that might come in handy for your children if they get hurt or sick.
Tips: I recommend applying for TSA Pre-check or Global Entry if you travel frequently with kids. This will save you time as the TSA line can be very long. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes for both you and your children. Don't feel overwhelmed, intimidated, or scared to travel with kids. There are plenty of other kids on the plane, so it's normal if they cry.
My first experience traveling with my daughter went well. I suggest choosing a window seat near the restroom at the back of the plane. Row 52 worked great for us.
Remember that each child is unique, so what works for one may not work for another. Consider your child's individual needs and preferences when packing their travel essentials. Stay calm and positive during the trip as your child will pick up on your energy. Have a safe journey!
