Yokohama Day Trip with Kids

Yokohama is a great place for a quick getaway from Tokyo, blending culture, fun attractions, and beautiful views, making it ideal for a family day trip. We spent a day visiting friends and exploring some of the best spots for kids. Here’s what we did!

How to get there

The journey from Tokyo to Yokohama is quick and convenient. The most common and convenient train lines from Tokyo to Yokohama are:

  • JR Tokaido Line (Fastest, around 25 minutes from Tokyo Station)

  • JR Yokosuka Line (Around 30 minutes from Tokyo Station)

  • JR Keihin-Tohoku Line (Frequent but slightly slower, around 40 minutes from Tokyo Station)

  • Tokyu Toyoko Line (Great for traveling from Shibuya, around 30 minutes to Yokohama Station)

We focused our trip on visiting friends in Yokohama. It was great to catch up, relax, and enjoy each other’s company while the kids played. Spending time with loved ones made the trip fun!

Exploring Chinatown

We started by strolling through Yokohama’s vibrant Chinatown, conveniently located right next to the station. Since we visited on a weekend, the streets were bustling with energy, filled with colorful decorations and the enticing aroma of freshly made dumplings and buns. We grabbed some delicious pork buns—perfect snacks to enjoy as we wandered through the streets. With plenty of street food, souvenir shops, and restaurants to choose from, Chinatown offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Relaxing at Yamashita Park

After having some snacks and lunch, we headed to Yamashita Park, a beautiful waterfront park with scenic views of the bay. The kids loved running around the open spaces, and we took a break to enjoy the sea breeze. It’s a great spot for families to unwind and soak in Yokohama’s peaceful atmosphere. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you might even catch a performance. The park is massive, making it an ideal place for kids to explore and enjoy.

Elephant Nose Café

After a walk in the park, we visited Elephant Nose Café, a nice place with a calming atmosphere. Situated by Yokohama’s waterfront, between Yamashita Park and the Red Brick Warehouse, it offers beautiful city views. We had coffee and cookies while enjoying the port view. The kids loved playing under the giant wooden elephant sculpture and enjoyed the small elephant display outside. The café’s laid-back vibe was an ideal stop before we continued our day.

Anitouch Minatomirai

Afterward, we headed to Anitouch Minatomirai, an indoor petting zoo that offers a very nice and interactive experience. The kids had a blast feeding and interacting with a variety of animals, including capybaras, rabbits, and more. The location is convenient and well-maintained, making it a perfect stop for families. The zoo is clean, and the interactive experience with the animals made it even more enjoyable. The kids loved spending time there and feeding the animals—it was a fun and memorable part of our day.

Yokohama Air Cabin

After visiting the petting zoo, we took a short walk before boarding the Yokohama Air Cabin, an urban ropeway that offers a unique aerial view of the waterfront. This short yet scenic ride was a hit with both kids and adults, providing a fresh perspective of Yokohama from above. It moves slow but it's worth trying. The staff were friendly and allowed us to board without folding the stroller. Since it's an easy-to-reach attraction, we chose a one-way ride to JR Sakuragicho Station. Overall, it was a fun experience!

Uniqlo Park

We ended our day at Uniqlo Park, a fun shopping and play area in Mitsui Outlet Park. It features rock climbing, game area, and great views of Tokyo Bay. While we shopped at Uniqlo and GU, the kids had fun in the play areas, including a rooftop garden and a colorful indoor play area on the 3rd floor. With its perfect mix of shopping and fun, it’s a must-visit for families when you’re in Japan! My daughter especially loved the big slide—she still talks about it! I hope they create another Uniqlo Park in the future!
